Travel Etiquette & Cultural Taboos in China
Basic Etiquette
Handshakes are the standard greeting — let elders or seniors extend their hand first. Use both hands when giving or receiving business cards or gifts. At the dinner table, hosts will keep serving food to guests — accept graciously, no need to finish everything. When toasting, hold your glass lower than elders' as a sign of respect.
Temples & Religious Sites
Dress conservatively at temples (cover shoulders and knees) — some provide wraps. Don't touch statues or offerings. Check if photography is allowed before shooting (some inner halls prohibit it). Be mindful of incense smoke and don't walk directly in front of the incense burner.
Number & Color Taboos
4 sounds like "death" — avoid gifts in sets of 4; many hotels skip the 4th floor. White is associated with mourning — avoid white flowers when visiting the sick or as gifts. Red is auspicious — wearing red at weddings and Spring Festival is welcomed. 8 sounds like "prosper" and is considered lucky.
Public Behavior
