5-Day Chengdu-Chongqing Food & Panda Trip

Five days from Chengdu's teahouse alleys to Chongqing's riverside hotpot stalls, with a bonus staring contest with giant pandas in between — this is hands-down my favorite short itinerary in southwest China.

Chongqing

最佳季节 Best Season:3–5月、9–11月 / March–May, September–November

It All Starts with a Bowl of Wontons

The moment you land at Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, the faint tingle of Sichuan pepper is already in the air. My advice: skip the attractions for now. Find a no-frills street-side eatery, sit down on a plastic stool, and order a bowl of red-oil wontons plus a plate of Zhong dumplings. That first bite — silky wrapper, juicy filling, a ladle of chili oil pooling on top — is your official welcome ceremony.

Save the afternoon for Kuanzhai Alley and People's Park. Yes, Kuanzhai Alley is touristy, but after 6 PM the tour groups vanish and the flagstone lanes belong to locals walking dogs and old men sipping lidded-bowl tea — that's when the real charm surfaces. Don't miss Heming Teahouse in People's Park either: fifteen yuan gets you a jasmine tea, a bamboo chair, and permission to do absolutely nothing all afternoon. That's how Chengdu people define "bashe" — comfort — and you'll only get it if you sit down.

Face to Face with the Furballs

Day two: head straight to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding first thing in the morning. One iron rule — gates open at 7:30 AM, be inside by 8:00. The reason is simple: pandas are early risers. Before 9 AM they're still out in the open enclosures munching bamboo, tumbling around, and shoving each other — scenes so adorable you'll forget to press the shutter. After 10 AM they retreat into air-conditioned rooms, and all you'll see through the glass is a black-and-white fur lump.

If time and budget allow, spend the afternoon at Dujiangyan. This irrigation system, built by Li Bing and his son over 2,200 years ago, is still functioning today. Standing on the Fish Mouth Levee watching the Min River split into two channels stirs an unexpected sense of awe. It's only a 30-minute bullet train from Chengdu — a totally doable day trip.

Leshan Buddha and Real Jianghu Flavors

Day three, take an inter-city train to Leshan — about one hour. The impact of the Giant Buddha must be experienced in person: a 71-meter Maitreya carved into red sandstone cliffs. The nine-switchback plank path from the head down to the toes is narrow and steep, the queue can stretch over an hour, but when you finally stand at the feet and crane your neck upward, the sheer scale — "humans as ants" — makes every minute of waiting worthwhile.

Leshan's food scene is the hidden bonus. Qiaojiao beef is non-negotiable: the broth simmers for hours with beef bones and Chinese herbs, and the beef is sliced paper-thin — it practically melts on your tongue. Boboji (cold skewers) is another must — chicken, lotus root, and wood ear mushrooms on bamboo sticks soaking in chili oil, about one yuan per skewer. I demolished thirty sticks and still wanted more.

Chongqing: Hotpot, Mountain City, and Cyberpunk Nights

Day four, move on to Chongqing. The moment you step out of Chongqing North Station you'll understand why it's called the "Mountain City" — roads run above your head, the light rail punches through a building beneath your feet, and GPS navigation basically surrenders. But it's precisely this surreal, three-dimensional layout that makes Chongqing one of a kind.

At night, find an old-school hotpot joint near Jiefangbei — look for the ones packed with locals and devoid of English menus. The nine-grid pot bubbles with crimson beef-tallow oil, fragrant and fierce. Blanch tripe for seven seconds, yellow throat for fifteen, then dip in sesame oil with mashed garlic — don't ask how I know the timing so precisely; a Chongqing friend drilled it into me. Step outside after the meal, hotpot aroma clinging to your clothes and night breeze on your face, and watch Hongyadong's lights cascade down the cliff face like the bathhouse in Spirited Away. In that moment, every drop of chili is worth it.

Don't Rush the Last Day

Save day five for a relaxed morning. Stroll through Ciqikou Ancient Town, pick up some Chen Mahua twisted crackers and hotpot seasoning packets as souvenirs, and walk along the Jialing River watching old houses and fresh graffiti coexist in wonderful dissonance. If you still have energy, ride the Yangtze River Cable Car — it only takes a few minutes one way, but beneath your feet lies the rolling river and the entire city skyline, a perspective that even a drone can't quite capture.

Five days on this route and your stomach will be gloriously on fire, your camera roll stuffed with panda memes, your legs questioning every life choice — and yet you'll already be planning a return trip.
