Essential Checklist for Visitors to China

Documents

Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date; keep a photocopy in the hotel safe. Visa: Most nationalities need to apply in advance; some enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access (e.g. Singapore, Thailand). Arrival card: Distributed on the plane — fill in your accommodation address (hotel name is fine).

Connectivity

SIM card: China Mobile/Unicom/Telecom counters at airports; tourist packages ~¥100–200/month with data. eSIM: Buy from Airalo etc. before departure — works immediately on arrival, no queuing. Pocket WiFi: Rentable in China, good for groups. Note: Google, WhatsApp, Instagram are blocked in mainland China — you need a VPN.

Payment

WeChat Pay/Alipay: Link a foreign Visa/Mastercard to use; single transaction limit ~¥6,000. Cash: Keep ¥500–1,000 for emergencies — remote scenic areas and small stalls may not accept QR payments. Bank cards: UnionPay works nationwide; Visa/Mastercard ATM withdrawals available in major cities, fee ~¥20–30/transaction.

Health & Safety

Travel insurance is strongly recommended — include medical emergency and evacuation coverage. Bring your own common medications (cold, stomach, allergy). Tap water is not drinkable in China; bottled water is ¥2–5 and available everywhere. Emergency numbers: 110 (police), 120 (ambulance), 119 (fire).
