On my second morning in Lanzhou, I placed my phone on the table by the hotel window as if checking an important tool before going out. I soon realized that in Lanzhou one cannot judge the map by distance alone. Many places are separated by the river; they may look close in a straight line, but one must find the right bridge. Some points on the hill are not far from downtown, yet slopes, descents, and physical energy must be considered. Some night market entrances appear clear, but after dark, when people and cars gather, location pins become less precise. I opened each place and checked the route, paying special attention to bridges and bus stops. That way, even if I changed plans after leaving, I would know roughly which section of the city I was standing in.

I also copied the hotel address into my notes app, writing it in both Chinese and English. Much of travel security does not come from complicated equipment, but from a line of address that can be shown to someone at any time. Lanzhou people speak with their own rhythm, and when street traffic, wind, and vendor calls mix together, a visitor may not immediately catch directions. If a ride-hailing location is inaccurate or if I need to ask the way, showing the address directly is more reliable than explaining on the spot. Under the address, I wrote several simple Chinese sentences: I want to go to Zhongshan Bridge; where is the nearest bus stop; please help me check this address. I might not use all of them, but having them ready made me much calmer.

Mobile payment also needed to be checked in advance. Lanzhou has many small shops, especially beef noodle restaurants, roadside fruit stands, and night market stalls. They look casual, but the payment rhythm is fast. When eating noodles in the morning, the people in line behind you will not stop the city’s pace while you slowly search for a bank card. Scan, pay, take the bowl, find a seat; there is almost no gap between actions. I checked whether my payment apps were logged in, whether my card worked, and whether the network was smooth. I also placed a little cash in my bag. Cash might not be necessary, but it is like a final step. Real preparation does not mean believing the phone will never have problems; it means admitting that it may have problems and leaving oneself a way not to panic.

Preparing battery is to avoid being chased by anxiety. Preparing maps is to make the city’s long distances manageable. Preparing payment is to enter local life smoothly. Preparing a few written sentences is to build a small bridge between language and environment. Lanzhou itself has real bridges crossing the Yellow River, and the preparations inside the phone are also invisible bridges, allowing a stranger to walk through a day steadily.

如果以后再去兰州，我仍会在出门前先花十分钟整理手机。不是因为我害怕这座城市，而是因为我尊重它的尺度。黄河不会为了游客缩短，两岸的路不会因为好奇心而自动靠近，山坡也不会因为地图上看起来近就变得轻松。准备好手机，是承认城市有自己的形状，然后用合适的方式进入它。等真正走在河边、桥上、山路和夜市之间时，人才可以少一点慌张，多一点余裕。兰州的风很干，路很长，晚上的灯很热闹，而一部准备好的手机，让这些经验能够顺利地连成一天。

If I go to Lanzhou again, I will still spend ten minutes preparing my phone before leaving. Not because I fear the city, but because I respect its scale. The Yellow River will not shorten itself for tourists, the roads on both banks will not automatically move closer because of curiosity, and a hillside will not become easy simply because it looks near on a map. Preparing the phone means acknowledging that the city has its own shape and entering it in an appropriate way. Once truly walking among the riverbank, bridges, mountain paths, and night market, a person can have less panic and more room. Lanzhou’s wind is dry, its roads are long, and its evening lights are lively; a well-prepared phone lets these experiences connect smoothly into one day.
