Chengdu: Home of Giant Pandas
Chengdu: Home of Giant Pandas
Chengdu runs on slow. The right way to experience it: pandas in the morning, teahouse in the afternoon, hotpot at night. Don't try to rush through attractions.
Giant Panda Breeding Base (Half Day)
The best place on Earth to see giant pandas — over 200 giant pandas and red pandas live here.
Key tips: - Gates open at 7:30 AM — arrive before 8. Pandas are active in the morning and mostly sleeping by 10 - Moonlight Nursery has cubs (if you're lucky, you'll see pink newborns just weeks old) - Sunshine Nursery has sub-adults (1–2 years old, the most playful stage) - Shuttle bus is ¥20, but walking lets you spot pandas hiding in corners that the bus passes
Kuanzhai Alley (2–3 Hours)
Three parallel alleys: Kuan (Wide) for architecture, Zhai (Narrow) for street food, Jing (Well) for creative shops. Ear cleaning (cai er) is a uniquely Chengdu experience — roadside practitioners charge ¥30–50.
Jinli Street + Wuhou Shrine (Half Day)
Wuhou Shrine is the only temple in China dedicated to both a ruler and his minister (Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang) — essential for Three Kingdoms fans. ¥50 entry. Jinli Street next door is a faux-ancient commercial street — prettier at night when the lanterns light up.
Must-eat at Jinli: Sandapao (sticky rice balls launched with a bang), Bobo Chicken (cold skewers in chili oil), Sweet Water Noodles (chewy noodles in sweet-spicy sauce)
Tea at People's Park (Must-Do)
This is Chengdu's soul. Grab a bamboo chair, order a lidded-bowl tea (¥15–30), and watch locals play cards, chat, and zone out. You can sit for hours and nobody will rush you. This is the most authentic Chengdu experience, and it's nearly free.
Hotpot (Must-Eat)
Chengdu hotpot leans "numbing" (Sichuan peppercorn) while Chongqing leans "spicy" (chili). "Mild spicy" is already intense for most foreigners — order a half-and-half pot (yuanyang, one side spicy, one side clear broth).
Recommendations: Xiaolongkan, Dalongyi, Shudaxia (chains but consistently good), or ask your hotel front desk for a local spot nearby. Budget ¥60–100 per person.
