I added one lesson from my own past trip: do not save only the English name of a hotel. The English address on international booking platforms is not always enough on the ground. For taxis, directions, and hotel registration, the Chinese address is more reliable. I suggested copying the Chinese name, Chinese address, phone number, and nearest metro station beside each booking. Late at night, language and battery become limited resources, and saved Chinese details can prevent a lot of panic.

International roaming, local SIM or eSIM options, apps that need advance login, offline map access, and translation tools should all be tested at home. The worst scenario is not simply having no internet; it is assuming you will have internet and discovering after landing that verification codes do not arrive, accounts require login again, or airport Wi-Fi needs SMS confirmation.

I suggested creating a “low-tech backup” page with important contacts: travel companions, hotel phone numbers, airline contacts, the embassy or consulate of his country, and the travel insurance hotline. A paper backup sounds old-fashioned, but it becomes very modern when a phone breaks, loses power, or disappears. Reliable preparation often means giving technology a way to fail safely.

第三天，我让他开始整理入境随身包。护照、登机牌、返程或后续机票、酒店订单、旅行保险、少量现金、笔、充电宝、充电线、常用药和一件薄外套，都放在随身可取的位置。托运行李里可以放衣服和礼物，但不能放你在入境窗口前必须拿出来的东西。

On day three, I asked him to organize an entry carry-on pouch. Passport, boarding pass, return or onward ticket, hotel booking, travel insurance, a small amount of cash, a pen, power bank, charging cable, regular medication, and a light jacket should all be easy to reach. Checked luggage can carry clothes and gifts, but not the items you may need to show before an immigration counter.

关于药品，我写得更细。常用药保留原包装，最好带英文说明或处方复印件，数量符合个人短期使用。不要随便携带来源不明的药片，也不要把朋友托带的东西塞进行李。入境准备清单不只是提高效率，也是在提醒自己：每一件带过边境的物品，都要说得清楚。

I wrote more carefully about medication. Keep regular medicine in original packaging, ideally with English instructions or a prescription copy, and bring an amount suitable for personal short-term use. Do not carry unknown pills casually, and do not put items from other people into your luggage without understanding them. An entry checklist is not only about efficiency; it also reminds you that everything crossing a border should be explainable.

On day two, we discussed arrival cards and declarations. Procedures can vary slightly by port, flight, and period, so I did not describe the steps as fixed. Instead, I told him to follow airline and on-site staff instructions, and to fill in name, passport number, flight number, address in China, and purpose of stay truthfully. If something is unclear, ask before writing randomly. A border is not an exam; honesty and consistency matter more than speed.

I also reminded him about customs declarations. Cash, tobacco, alcohol, animal or plant products, commercial samples, drones, and professional equipment may involve specific rules. For an ordinary tourist, it is usually not complicated, but “I did not know” is not the best strategy. Spending ten minutes reading customs reminders before departure is calmer than searching frantically in front of the red and green channels.

The best entry attitude is not excessive enthusiasm, but clarity, politeness, and cooperation.

I also wrote down possible questions for him: why are you coming to China, how long will you stay, where will you live, do you have a return ticket, and is this your first visit. Each can be answered in one sentence. If English communication is difficult, use a translation app or show the officer the relevant information. Nervousness is normal, but do not invent a story because of it; a real itinerary is the easiest to keep consistent.

The end of entry is not as romantic as the beginning of travel; it feels more like switching from one system to another, requiring a few minutes for body and mind to synchronize.

That is why my checklist included the “first hour at the airport.” First find a spot that does not block the way, confirm luggage, passport, and wallet are all there, connect to the internet, message family, and then decide on transportation. Do not study every option while walking, and do not let strangers rush you into decisions when tired. One of the most important airport skills is allowing yourself to stop for two minutes.

From the Shanghai airport to the city, he eventually chose the metro. I asked him to copy the hotel’s Chinese address into a chat window so he could show it to staff or a driver if needed. Urban transport does not need to be the cheapest or fastest at the very beginning; the goal of the first ride is control. After reaching the hotel, showering, and sleeping, you will naturally have more energy to study routes, restaurants, and sights.

Later, I organized the checklist into four time points: one week before departure, confirm eligibility and documents; three days before departure, prepare payment, communication, and files; on departure day, leave extra time for airport procedures; after landing, stabilize yourself before entering the city. It does not replace official rules, and it does not guarantee everyone will face the same questions. Its value is that it turns the unknown into pieces you can check.
