Xi'an in One Day: City Wall Cycling, Muslim Quarter, and Big Wild Goose Pagoda
You have exactly one day for Xi'an.
This happens more often than you'd think — many travelers pass through Xi'an by high-speed rail, or their itinerary only leaves one day for this capital of thirteen dynasties. Is one day enough? Honestly, Xi'an deserves at least three. But with one day, the route below is the best arrangement I've tested repeatedly.
7:00 AM — Start Cycling at the South Gate
Xi'an's City Wall is one of China's best-preserved ancient walls — 13.74km total, about 90 minutes by bike.
The South Gate (Yongning Gate) is the main entrance, opening at 8:00 (sometimes 7:30 in peak season). Wall admission is ¥54, bike rental ¥45/2 hours. If you arrive early, wait at South Gate Plaza and grab a cup of soy milk.
Cycling on the wall is a singular experience — ancient grey rooftops on one side, modern skyscrapers on the other, two eras visible simultaneously. The east and north sections are the least crowded, good for stopping to take photos. The west section overlooks the train station direction — if there's morning fog, that stretch feels almost cinematic.

10:00 AM — Muslim Quarter: Go Beyond the First Street
From the South Gate, it's about 10 minutes by taxi to the Muslim Quarter (or 20 on foot). The Muslim Quarter isn't one street — it's a district. Beiyuanmen is the main drag and the most congested.
Local advice: walk Xiyangshi and Dapiyuan. These two lanes run parallel to Beiyuanmen with similar food stall density but half the crowds and more honest prices.
Must-eat list (personally tested, ranked):
- Lao Mi Jia Paomo (Xiyangshi) — lamb/beef pita soup, ¥38 a bowl. Don't order the "premium" version; the regular IS the premium. You need to break the bread yourself — tear it into tiny pieces (the smaller, the better the flavor). Expect to spend 10–15 minutes on this. Don't rush.
- Zheng Gao at Dongnanya (mid-Beiyuanmen) — date and sticky rice cake, ¥10 a box. Sweet but not cloying.
- Granny Hua's Sour Plum Drink (Dapiyuan) — ¥8 a cup, hand-brewed, nothing like the bottled stuff.
Time budget: About 1.5 hours to eat and walk. Don't buy souvenirs in the Muslim Quarter — overpriced and identical everywhere.
1:00 PM — Shaanxi History Museum
From the Muslim Quarter to Shaanxi History Museum, it's about 5km (15 minutes by taxi). Free admission but reservation required — book at least one day ahead through the museum's WeChat official account. Peak season slots fill fast.
If free tickets are gone, buy a ¥30 "Tang Dynasty Treasure" special exhibition ticket, which also grants access to the permanent galleries.
Museum highlights: Hejiacun Hoard (Tang dynasty gold and silver pieces — impossibly refined for artifacts over 1,000 years old), Tri-color Glazed Camel with Musicians (the pinnacle of Tang sancai pottery), and Gilt Bronze Silkworm (a tiny 2,000-year-old bronze silkworm — physical evidence of Silk Road trade).
Quick tour: 1.5 hours. Deep tour: 3 hours. With one day, spend 1.5 hours focused on the Tang dynasty galleries.
3:30 PM — Big Wild Goose Pagoda & Tang Paradise Night Street
From the museum, walk or taxi to Big Wild Goose Pagoda in about 15 minutes.
The pagoda entrance is ¥40, climbing it is another ¥25. Built in 652 AD, it was where Xuanzang stored Buddhist scriptures brought back from India. The interior is compact, but the view from the top floor is worth those 25 yuan — the entire southern suburbs and the outline of the Zhongnan Mountains spread out before you.
The north plaza has musical fountain shows (peak season at 12:00/16:00/18:00/21:00) — the evening show is best, with water jets lit up by colored lights. But crowds in season are suffocating; if you can't find a good spot, a quick glance is enough.
The real evening attraction: Tang Paradise Night Street (大唐不夜城), a 1.5km pedestrian boulevard directly south of the pagoda, lined with full-scale Tang dynasty replica architecture and blazing with lights after dark. The highlights: the famous "Lady of the Tang Dynasty" balancing performer (free, crowds pack in shoulder to shoulder), Hanfu cosplayers everywhere, and solid Shaanxi street food stalls.

Timeline Summary
Cost |
|---|---|---|
City Wall cycling | ¥99 |
Muslim Quarter brunch | ¥50-80 |
History Museum | ¥0-30 |
Big Wild Goose Pagoda | ¥65 |
This itinerary works by metro too, but taxis are more flexible — Didi base fare in Xi'an is about ¥8, and keeping total transport costs under ¥80 for the day is doable.
If you can squeeze an extra half day, consider visiting Xi'an's Forest of Steles Museum before heading toward the Dunhuang-to-Turpan Silk Road route — it's the true eastern starting point. And regarding China's scenic rail routes, Xi'an is a "米-shaped" hub connecting almost every direction.
