How to Avoid Tourist Trap Souvenirs in China
80% of souvenirs at tourist sites are mass-produced from Yiwu wholesale markets. This guide helps you spend less and get items of real value.
Souvenirs to Avoid
"Jade" at scenic area entrances — 99% is dyed glass or quartzite. A "Hetian jade" bracelet priced at ¥500 might cost ¥5 to make. Never buy without a certification.
"Antiques" and "unearthed relics" — all fake, and trading real ones is illegal. Those aged-looking coins and porcelain shards are factory products.

Generic fridge magnets and keychains — nearly identical at every scenic spot, just stamped with different place names. Visit local creative shops for better-designed alternatives.
Souvenirs Worth Your Money
Local food specialties — the safest souvenir choice. Yunnan's flower cakes, Beijing's Daoxiangcun pastries, Xi'an's cured beef, Chengdu's lamp shadow beef. Supermarkets are much cheaper than scenic shops.
Museum merchandise — the Palace Museum, Sanxingdui Museum, and Dunhuang creative products are excellent. Unique designs, guaranteed quality, and reasonable prices. The Palace Museum's lipstick line once went viral online.
Handicrafts — buy where artisans gather: Jingdezhen ceramics, Suzhou double-sided embroidery, Guizhou Miao village silver jewelry. If you see the craftsperson making it on the spot, it's the real deal.
The best souvenirs are experiences — a calligraphy lesson, pottery class, or cooking session with a chef. These memories are worth more than any object.
