Best Chinese Souvenirs Worth Buying
What to bring home? This guide helps you avoid mass-produced trinkets and find souvenirs with real cultural value.
Silk Products
Hangzhou is China's silk capital. The China Silk Museum shop offers quality-guaranteed scarves (¥100-300), silk eye masks, and handkerchiefs. Suzhou's double-sided embroidered silk is exquisite. Avoid "silk scarves" sold at scenic area entrances — most are synthetic.

Tea
Buy local tea in its home city: Longjing in Hangzhou, Tieguanyin and Da Hong Pao in Fujian, Pu'er in Yunnan. Tea markets (like Beijing's Maliandao Tea City) are half the price of tourist tea shops. Ask for vacuum sealing for easy transport.
Four Treasures of the Study
Brush, ink, Xuan paper, and inkstone — Anhui's She County offers the most authentic She inkstones and Hui ink. Beijing's Liulichang Culture Street also has established shops. A starter set costs ¥200-500, perfect for friends interested in Chinese culture.

Jingdezhen Porcelain
Jingdezhen is the "porcelain capital." The Tao Xichuan Creative District features original works by young potters. A hand-painted blue-and-white cup costs ¥50-200; quality tea sets start from ¥500. Look for hand-thrown and hand-painted — machine-printed isn't worth buying.
Porcelain is fragile — ask the shop to wrap with foam. Tea clears customs easily, but meat and plant seeds cannot be taken out.
